Just picked up an 1860 Spencer carbine. Can brass be formed out of 50-70 brass???

Yes, if it?s an original Spencer. If it?s a reproduction, the rim will have to be reduced some.

Hello:

If an original 1860 or 1865, you will need a center-fire upper block and a magazine tube follower with a recess that eliminates contact with primers.

Searching on our Forum, on the CAS/SSS, Spencer Shooting Society Forum and YOUTUBE will show many threads, posts and a great video about how to make either 56-56 centerfire or 56-50 centerfire. The Armisport/Chiappa repro's are, per their description, 1865 56-50's, with a c-f upper block and mag tube follower w recess.

If you have the upper C-F block, I can share my notes on adapting STARLINE 50-70/90 brass. Smiles.

It is original and has 6 grooves. I?m not sure which chamber it is. 56-50 or 56-56?

Hello:
My long text was dumped with a timed-out notice.
Here's another attempt:
There are some Spencer guru's here, so I defer to them, but in the meantime:
And, there are variations/oddball's from the following;

Top of bbl: 1860 Nothing marked, 1865 stamped 1865.
Carbine bbl: 1860 22" long , 1865 20" long.
LAND diameter: 1860 .520" , 1865 .500".
Rifling: 1860 6L&G, 1865 Same - Burnside 3L&G.
Case length: 56-56 .875", 56-50 1.15", both approx.
Hammer tip: 1860 Squared, 1865 Rounded inward.
Rear staff : 1860 downward dished, 1865 upward rounded.

Smiles,
Kevin Tinny
