I have a 2nd Model Maynard which I'll be shooting for the first time soon. What are the experiences of other Maynard shooters regarding the front sight? Did you require a taller one to get it on target? S&S has the front sights available.12455

Mark,
In my original 2ed model Maynard my sights are right on with full sights at 100 yards using 35gr 3F and a veggie wad under your smith bullet.

Thanks Sir,

Good to know, and also pleased that the bullet is doing well for you.

Depending on your age and sight preferences, you might want to swap out the rear sight with this one, https://www.ssfirearms.com/proddetail.asp?prod=MY215, which gives you a flip style leaf sight suitable for either square notch or peep. You can also correct any windage issues at the same time.

If you have any questions about how to make the measurements and the adjustments, send me a PM.

Thanks Bob, I'll know when I shoot it. A peep sight might help seeing around the hammer better.

I have a taller front sight and a rear peep. the taller sights get me over the hammer that some shooters say gets in the way.

Mark, I put a new front sight on my original second model Maynard. It's just a shade taller than the original front sight. I shoot a Moose Smith/Maynard bullet (400 grains) sized to .518" and 35 grains of 3F. The bullet is long enough that it sits on top of the powder so I don't need a wad or filler. I have been shooting this carbine for over thirty-five years (originally used a Rapine bullet of similar weight and height to the Moose bullet) and it is very accurate and I have not found a reason to change anything.
