Looking to see how much powder is typically used with a Lyman 580213 round (.580 - 510gr). I know that will vary with each shooter, the gun, lube etc. Had been shooting a Rapine 580510 (.580 - 510gr) but had to shoot 54 gr 3F. It was killing my shoulder. Have heard some guys shoot in the 44-46-48 range. Don't want to buy the Lyman only to find I need to shoot 54 gr. What is your experience?

The Richmond carbine likes 44.5 gr. 3f by weight, the Whitney and '55 rifles respond well to 45.5. Some guys I have heard get good results as low as 37 gr. The key, of course, is perfectly soft lead.

My experience with that bullet is from 42 to 45 Grs of 3F. Lead must be soft. And as you mentioned Lube and Barrel will cause differences. I've used it primarily in original 1st Gen P-H 2 bands and 3 bands with orig style rifling as well as custom Large barrels, all with good results. The skirt is thin on this bullet, so as long as the lead is soft, should have decent results with lower Grain weights. Bearing surface is good too.

But than again I have found that each gun seems to have its own particular differences!!  :? I started out in '74 with 1 mold, now have 70!!! to experiment with and still looking for anything new or different.

Good Luck,

Thanks Dennis & Jim for your reply. Looks like the Lyman 580213 round shoots well with 44-46 grains of 3F or less. Guess the thin skirt makes a difference. Currently using a Rapine 580460 (.580 - 460 gr) with thicker skirt. Have soft lead and narrowed my load to 46-48 grains. Need to see which load works best at the range tomorrow. Hopefully I can get the load even lighter with the Lyman mold. Problem now is finding a Lyman 580213 mold. If you hear of one for sale please let me know.
