The model 1 has a tang sight and a tape primer system also a patch box. The nipple is also different. Ther are a couple of other small differences.

The model 2 Maynard was a wartime production carbine that eliminated some features deemed neither necessary or desirable in the 1st model. The 1st mod had the Maynard tape primer system, a takedown system, a strange butt plate with a patchbox and some had a tang sight. 1st models were made in both 20" and 26" barrels. All these features were left off the 2nd model. The butt plate was changed to a Sharps style. All barrels were 20". The takedown feature was eliminated. In other words, it was simplified.
