In the posted skirmish rules section 20.7.3(b) it states that a wooden dowel may be used for loading single shot pistols.

Is there a requirement for the dowel to fit into the existing ramrod channel or can it be a larger diameter like 7/16" or 1/2"?

Not that I know of.

The problem is that the wood with brass end caps do not hold up and the brass end that you would handle is not rounded, has sharp edges. Or at least mine is this way. It was from the first batch of repops.

I ended up getting Tom to make some Brass rods just for the SB. They are a little oversized, easy to hold on to and in my eyes safer then the wood.
I started with a hardwood dowel myself. 1/2" if I recall.
