WTB - Minie Ball Mould .69 caliber

Recently purchased a M1842 Rifle Musket and now looking for a Minie Ball Mould. Seems these Moulds are as scarce as hen?s teeth with few options available.

EBay has a Lyman Mould (compleat) available with a ?show stopping? price of almost $400. I had thought of getting one from Moose (great price!) but not sure I want to use a ?wad cutter? style Minie. I?d like to get a Lyman but the price might be a killer!

Anybody have an alternative?

I have tried the Lyman bullet in my rifled 1842 and have not had good results. I suspect the Lyman bullets are undersized for the .690 lands and deeper grooves. Perhaps others have experience they would share. jh

Located near Gettysburg - between Waynesboro and Gettysburg, close to the M-D Line. Before committing to getting a mould, I decided to try 20 Minies from a Lyman Mould. Getting them from Pat Kaboskey in a couple of weeks. I may have to get a Mould from Moose if the Lyman Minies don?t work out so well.

Hello there.
Years ago I had Lyman molds expertly modified to fit my Fremont barrel.
Check out this front band revised to provide better alignment in the barrel.

As far as I know such services are no longer available anywhere at an affordable price so new molds are the way to go.
Tom at Accurate Molds has some designs to drool over. He produces excellent quality and can tweak the diameters to suit your needs.

Been checking out Accurate Mould and I am impressed by the number of mould variations available. I?ll probably go that route instead of having to settle for a style that I just don?t want. I did find a style that I?m certain will work.

Accurate offers moulds in aluminum, brass and ductile iron. I am real leery of both aluminum and brass solely based on durability. All of my moulds, except one, are Lyman and are steel. I use a Lyman 575213os which, by far, is my favorite mould. I?ve used that mould for years with no problem because once its heated up, the mould casts uniform Minies every time. Using the right powder charge and sized minie, the accuracy is fantastic. Many years ago, before I bought the Lyman Mould, I used a Lee old style minie. The minie was OK but the mould just didn?t last. One Winter, I sat down and cast up about 400 Minies from that mould. The mould got so hot, it warped and just wouldn?t cast a good projectile after that. I vowed after that, ?no more aluminum moulds?! Even though aluminum is a lot less expensive, the mould just won?t last. Accurate doesn?t offer a steel mould but has a ductile mould instead. Having worked for an iron foundry before I retired, that definitely is the way to go!
