This is an interesting M1841 rifle with a Harpers Ferry type IV alteration barrel equipped with the M1858 rear sight. The barrel is marked with the typical Harpers Ferry V over P over eagle head markings on the breech, as well as a WW over P stamp. The tang shows a 185_ date with the last digit not being visible. The bore is .58 caliber with 3 groove rifling. The balance of the gun appears to be of Whitney manufacture, including the 1847 dated lock. Both the barrel and the stock flat are well struck with a New Jersey surcharge. The stock also has two nice cartouches; the rear a WAT and the forward one a script SK.
Other than the absent ramrod the gun is very nice with very good wood. The brass components have a very attractive patina to them. The iron parts are free from rust, but the barrel has a mottled patina to it.
Due to the matching N.J stamps on the barrel and stock I believe this rifle probably exists in its war time configuration. The Harpers Ferry type IV alteration is fairly scarce, with somewhere between 1,100 and 2,500 of them believed to have been altered as such.
