CS Richmond carbine

I picked up a CS Richmond carbine (.579+ bore size) on a trade and tried 2 different styles of minie' with interesting results. I found that it does not shoot well with the minie wadcutter and it was very eratic. (Which I have been using for years with my Springfield until I replaced the barrel). Then I tried out the RCBS hodgdon (sized to .578, 40 gr. FFF) and to my delight, got a nice tight group with the windage and elevation right where it's supposed to be. I really like that Hodgdon and it also shoots very well with my Zoli Zouave and Whitacre barrel on my '63 Springfield. Not too sure what the rate of twist is on the CS Richmond but I love that carbine. Anybody else having similar experiences with the Hodgdon please share.

That's my favorite bullet for 1 in 72 and 1 in 78 three groove progressive depth rifling (Whitacre, Hoyt or original, doesn't seem to matter). If the bedding is right, 42 gr. of Swiss 3f will punch one ragged hole all afternoon. In my P-58 Army rifle with 5 groove 1 in 48 progressive depth, the same thing happens with 39 gr. of Swiss 3F. However, I've tried it in the faster twist multigroove barrels with at best mixed results.

I have a James River Armory Richmond Carbine with Hoyt barrel. I find it shoots great with the RCBS-Hodgdon .578 sized to .576 with 44 grains 3F Goex.

I have no luck with the Hodgdon in My 1:48 Pedersoli P58. Keyholes.

With the CS Richmond there are several different barrels.
JRA built them with cut down euro arms barrels, smoothbore Euro that they had Hoyt rifle.
Aside from that I have seen barrels that were line, new ful barrels from hoyt and Whitacre.

Point is the CS Richmond has a large range of barrels, twist and depth.
I have one that was cut down Euro and a friend has a JRA cut down. No standard.

Bobby Hoyt relined it .577 with a 1:48 twist which he said was the preferred Richmond carbine twist for good accuracy at 100 yards, which makes sense. The only .577 minies I had on hand were Rapine semi wadcutters which shot great in my original relined Mississippi. They wouldn't group in the Richmond, even at 50 yards. The short barrel needed the faster twist which in turn likes a longer bullet.

Steve do you have the deep skirt insert for the Hoggdon? They seem to shoot reasonable well out of my PH P58.

It's a standard RCBS-Hodgdon mold I believe I bought from Midway USA, so I don't think so.

This has been my experience with the 1:48 twist also, but I have a teammate who is getting good results with the Moose 577-420 out of a Parker Hale P58 and I never did with my Pedersoli P58.

I think (not sure) you can still order the deep skirt inserts for them and it does make quite a difference in the grip the skirt gets on the rifling... I will see if I can dig up where you can order one or if someone else knows they can chime in...

John Dewald at North East Trade Co, Mauncy, PA is a sutler that was involved in Tony Bagdon's and J.B. Hodgdon's development of at least one wadcutter version that became the RCBS.

John made several base plugs for Bagdon and may still have a version that is different than the stock plug.

I've been using the Hodgdon in my '41 for the past 6 months and it outshoots the Rapine wadcutter that I was previously satisfied with.
