I'd like to disassemble my type 2 split breech for cleaning, inspection and lubrication. I've very familiar with later rolling blocks, but the split breech is a very different thing. Has anyone taken one apart or can offer tips on how to do it correctly? Same for putting it back together
Thanks,
Steve

I had one years ago and did have it apart. The only thing I remember as being critical is that the fore end has to come off so you can get at the mainspring to relieve the tension and remove it. After that the rest was rather simple. If memory serves getting the mainspring back in was tricky. Here's a link to a photo of the parts laid out in their relation to each other.

I've had the forend off and seen the forward facing mainspring. I took this photo when I had it off. I was wondering how to get it compressed and removed. Maybe a Springfield mainspring vise can get in there between the barrel and spring. I suppose there is a trick to it. I'll probably remove the buttstock and forend again and look at it from both ends.
Thanks

I think I remember you loosen the trigger guard. You relieve the pressure that way. But don't remember for sure. See.... https://www.remingtonsociety.org/Piwigo/picture.php?/307/category/40 ... patent picture.
