Put a Whitacre barrel on my 1861 Springfield. Comes with extra tall front sight so it can be filed down to suit your tastes. The lowest sight is 100 yards? What is the maximum range at N-SSA skirmishes shooting at targets? Should I sight it in for a 6 o'clock hold at 100 yards? What would you do? Thanks in advance.

100 yards is our maximum range for the rifle musket. Most of our shooting is 50 yards. Since the Springfield rear sight has two leaves, sight in one for 50 yards and the other for 100.

On a full length musket, if you sight in at 50 using a 6 o'clock "lollipop hold" on a clay pigeon, you will be pretty much dead on at 100.

i removed the leaves and installed a shooters L sight. you drill your holes into it and its a peep sight. a little more accurate for me.

Sight BOTH 50 & 100 yards for deadon hold. We shoot different size targets so a 6 oclock hold on one target can be a miss on another.

For those of you who lean towards the calculation side of things, check this out

http://www.shooterscalculator.com/ballistic-trajectory-chart.php?pl=%5BPreset+Name%5D&presets=&df=G1&bc=0.35&bw=400&vi=1000&zr=70&sh=1.0&sa=0&ws=0&wa=90&cr=100&ss=25&chartColumns=Range%7Eyd%3BElevation%7Ein%3BElevati on%7EMOA%7EFBFFF5%3BElevation%7EMIL&lbl=&submitst=+Create+Graph+

For our bullets, use a BC of about 0.35

You MUST measure the height of the front sight FROM THE CENTER OF THE BORE. Bullet weight does NOT MATTER.

Use about 1000 FPS for velocity (unless you have already crono-graphed your bullet spead).

From the graphs, you can easily compute the bullet drop between 50 and 100 yards.... Its bigger than you think.

From Tony's suggestion of Lollipop at 50 yards, assume that the gun was sighted in at 70 yards. Shoots about 2 inches HIGH at 50 and 4 inches LOW at 100...

Enjoy!

Same story with my '41 Mississippi.
