View Full Version : Got a Sharps, and a couple questions

I purchased a Garrett Sharps from another member and it arrived yesterday. I was able to get to the range and put a few rounds through it.

The major surprise was how much powder blowback I was getting. It felt like someone slapping me across the forehead. Was using 45 grains of 3f, I may try 2f next time to see if that makes a difference. Still, the action remained just as smooth on the sixth shot as it was on the first.

As you will see, the breech block has some sort of gasket between the seal plate and the block. I?m guessing this didn?t factory. Does anyone recognize this modification? Is this something that should be replaced with time? I have not tried to remove the plate yet.

Similar to your picture, I fill my Garrett breach block with red high temperature silicone. Usually remove and replace every two years. Gas check plate is original. Shoots NEI 540-465 with 35 gr 3f Goex and Uncle Mikes nipple. I can shoot indefinitely without seizing of the breech block.

Looks like alignment with the chamber sleeve is off a little. May be some wear in the link.

Paul could you post a picture of your breechblock, curious as to how it looks with the silicone

Got the block apart and cleaned. Plate shows some erosion, but hopefully not enough to warrant replacement yet. The gasket is in pretty good shape, but not knowing how old it is it?s probably time for a replacement. It is marked ?3/3 R.? A google search didn?t reveal anything that looked similar. Does anyone know what size this is by the picture? https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210212/e80d53ff5dc7aeb419337312421c18f9.jpg

Have seen cut down rubber valve stems used.

I would send it to Larry Flees or Charlie Hahn and have the mods done. They use two different methods both with good success and you'll never need to worry with it again. Well worth every penny spent in my opinion. Just my 2 cents.

Can you post a picture of the breech face?

The first thing I do is shim the gas plate square to the breech face. For this gun, it?s about .003? added to the right side between the block and plate. Fill the breech block with high temperature silicone and allow to overfill. Let cure for 2 weeks and trim flush to the face with a razor knife. It will slowly get beat back over time. Block pictured is after 2 seasons. I?ll get a third year, then over the winter break dig out the old and repeat the process.

Does all this do the same thing as the washer? Just keep the junk out?

Upon cleaning it this evening, I found that the chamber bushing does indeed come right out. It measures out at a .549 diameter and will not fit an unsized (.553) Christmas Tree style in it. I?m probably going to see if someone can make me a bigger one to fit a full hunting charge.

Slugged the bore as well, it?s a pretty tight .530.

If the bullet you are showing doesn't fit, then what bullet did you shoot initially?
