Alox as your ONLY lubricant

Question to the group: Have you ever tried ONLY Alox as your lubricant? No grease, no beeswax, no Crisco, no nuthin...

I'm very curious to hear exactly what you experienced.

My 'guess' is that the gun will foul-out quickly and easily since I don't see Alox as a fouling-softener, but I'm all ears!!

Muskets and Carbines are my primary focus...

PS: I know that some folks use it in their smoothbore... You brass-brushing the fouling out or is it nice and soft??

Alox can make a huge mess! The only thing I use Alox for is smoothbore. And then I thin it down with mineral spirits and only use about 3 drops for 25-30 balls. shaken in a Tupperware container. After 2 batches there's enough residue stuck inside the container to do 2 more batches without adding any Alox at all. then lay them out on a cookie sheet and let them air dry at least 24 hours.
Smith and Maynard, dip in Lens Lube to the top ring of bullet, wipe the bottom off while still wet.
Musket, the only lube I have ever used in over a dozen muskets over many years is Crisco. The Good Crisco with Palm oil, which at one time was only available in Canada. Use just enough to fill the cavity of the hollow base.

Alox for smoothbore. Coat the dimpled round balls and let dry. Alox acts like a ?gummy? patch that corrects for wind age. Musket/Carbine - in a large empty tuna fish can, equal volumes of beeswax and crisco with a cap full of ?oil?. I have tried olive oil, ballistol vegetable oil, neatsfoot oil, motor oil and Bear oil separately and together. It was fun trying to find the correct lube for the never miss Magic bullet. If nothing else, it was range time. Still trying!

I use Alox on smoothbore rounds also, after roughing them up. I agree it acts as a windage eater and probably does not do much as a lubricant. Smoothbore is a dirty gun to shoot and I can feel a fouling ring at a certain point in the barrel when cleaning.

Tried it years ago.
Looking for something to hold thd bullet in place for hunting. Lots of movement and banging around the bullet with 50-50 mix BW ELOO the bullet would move when warm or really cold.

Alox stopped that and still shot. Problem is it would only shoot a few times before you could not reload.
Also the powder would stick to the powder so the only way I could do it is paint it on the bottom band of the bullet.

For hunting it will do fine but really a PITA for cleaning and range time.

SB is a different thing but still will not use it just do to clean up.

Keep in mind there is liquid Alox a lot of us use for smoothbore and the stick Alox for use in lubrisizers.

I never used it with black powder. As I understand it, alox is a petroleum product. I have always heard that when the products of black powder combustion meet a petroleum product it makes a very hard crusty fouling. So, I have just never tried it. Same reason I've never used paraffin in black powder bullet lube.
