Bore Butter

I have only been doing this 4 years, and still learning from what I read from the more experienced guys on here. I have been using Ballistol in my barrel for rust prevention. I have heard Bore Butter works well also, and doesn't run to the breach and clog up the flash port while in storage. Is this true? What are the pros and cons with Bore Butter, and is it superior to Ballistol?

My son-in-law uses bore butter when the season ends and in the Spring when he is ready to shoot he cleans the bore butter out of the barrel. He never has a rust problem. I use have used Ballistoil for years and it keeps the bores on firearms in nice shape.

I used Bore Butter, a.k.a. Natural Lube 1000, for many years in BPCR and muzzleloading longrifles. My ONLY complaint was that bore butter turns a dingy brown over time. When you run a patch down a barrel to clean that out, it looks like it's pulling rust. Strictly for cosmetics, I decided to use WD-40 as a barrel preservative. My bores stay clean and shiny now. When I want to remove the residual oil to shoot, I use an alcohol patch.

PS - Because black powder shooters are cheap SOBs, at least the ones that trained me, I tried to make my own bore butter using bees wax and olive oil. I never got the proportions quite right before I switched to the WD-40.

PPS - Take no offense at the term SOB. People have been calling me that for years, but I'm told it stands for "Sweet Old Bob."

If you would like to stop oil gathering in the breech and nipple area store your musket muzzle down, I place it that position all the time.

I've only tried bore butter as a bullet lube. I suppose it works OK in the Winter, but not in a South Georgia Summer. It won't stay in a lube groove long enough to get a bullet into a gun.

I clean my muzzle loaders with Ballistol, then coat the bore and the exterior metal with Bore Butter for storage.

I also store my MLs muzzle down in the safe.

Thanks for the response y'all. I have had good results with Ballistol with the exception of it running into the breech during storage. To remedy this, I run a wet patch with Balistol down the barrel and then a quick run with a dry patch to cleanup the excess. Seems to have better results.
