I picked up a repro Carbine Cartridge Box for cheap on ebay - $25. But it did not have the wooden block insert for the cartridges. So, I 3D printed ones to go in! I had to print it in two halves because the printer can't handle one full-length. Smith and Sharps cartridges fit no problem. Even standard .58 tubes will fit if they have the rims trimmed off. The rubber .58 tubes fit no problem.

How Much for 2?

I really didn't want to get into making these to sell. I tried putting it up on Shapeways - they have a neat shop where you can upload your parts and get a cut. I have a Walker loading lever clip (https://www.shapeways.com/product/4PQXFU8EB/colt-walker-clip) up there that is still reasonably-priced at like $14. But even with zero markup, they want over $70 a piece to print the carbine insert piece - and you need 2 of them!

It does take about 9 hours to print one, so maybe that is why it is so expensive.

Hello, Steve:

Your photo gave me shivers! Amazing, then the time and cost issue. Oh, well.

A few years back when looking for 56-50 Spencer cases, I saw Rocky Mountain Ctg once shipped their custom 56-50 cases in J & J Products' XL-20 slip cases. This size accomodates 45-70 to 600 Nitro, a skirmishing round for sure! Oop's. This outfit is in Oxnard, CA. Their website shows the box with dim's that don't exactly match mine. Interested shooters should verify the outer dimensions of the main box for fit in individual ctg boxes.

By chance the male, cartridge section is a perfect fit in my standard "cavalry" 20 round ctg box and have used it for several years for both soft tube musket ctg's and Smith ctg's. The cartridge holding section can be cut to height and the cavities stuffed with fiber shotshell wads to elevate the rounds for easy grasp yet not so high the flap crunches them. I bought a case of XL-20's, direct from them for my Spencer rounds and chopped them to match the stubby 56-50 rounds. Have been very happy. Just a suggestion for an alternative.

Please keep the techy stuff flowing. Love it. Smiles.

Yeah I can relate. It gave me the willies! On second thought that's not really accurate. It was more like the heebie jeebies.

Well if they had 3d printers they would have used them!

ok, thanks. Are you willing to release the Cad/print file? might have to buy a 3d printer in the future to make a few of these as well as other nicknacks

Thanks in advance

For what it's worth... While on the particular subject of cartridge box inserts, I'd humbly like to offer an alternative.

The attached pdf files (I couldn't post MS Word documents) that give the user templates for .69, .58 & 44-40 inserts, should they want to make their own custom inserts.

If you can't open pdf files, email me ( rdfreeman1906@gmail.com ) and I'll send the files as Word docs to you directly.

Granted, wooden blocks are NOT a "sexy" as modern 3D printed inserts; however, old school wooden blocks get the job done, esp. once they're all set up to your personal tastes.

For me, I primarily use my carbine cartridge box for all matches, with the exception of the Sunday Musket Match.

I'm sure the 3D printed inserts allow for this, but the custom made (drilled) wooden inserts afford the user the ability to "customize" their blocks by varying the depth of the holes to their individual preference. Some like one row at a certain height, others like alternating depths for every other round. Bottom line these are good starting points to at least set the pilot marks for holes that are to be drilled. You can explore / test any combination of how rounds are staged for effortless/thought free retrieval from your cartridge box - YOU have to determine what works best for YOU.

Be advised the L x W x D of the block(s) may need to be tweaked so as to conform to the interior dimensions of your cartridge box.

Finally, results may vary. I am NOT a wood working guy, I had a friend help make mine. The .69 one was esp tricky with the extremely thin walls btwn the stacked rounds within such a confined space.

I hope this is of some help to some folks out there looking for a worthwhile "project" in preparation of next year!

Stay well - stay HEALTHY!

I think wooden blocks are superior since they are a period technology.

I just lazied out. Push a button, come back some hours later and done. :)
