I have been shooting my recently purchased Shiloh Sharps carbine and have noticed something I have not seen before. The RWS caps are perforated with a 3/32" hole after firing. I am using an ampco nipple with a barely .040" flash hole. Load is 42 grains Swiss 2Fg. Ignition is fine, caps stay on the nipple, groups are good, and I don't notice anything else weird. Larry Flees chamber modification. Thoughts?

I suspect either hammer not landing square on cap, or the nipple ampco or not allowing excessive blow-back.

I have an 1863 Springfield that does this. Inner face of hammer worn to leave raised ?pin?

Inner face of hammer shows slight impact mark- even all around and less than that on my other percussion weapons. Strong mainspring, BTW.

Really big hole. Nipple business-end real sharp edge?? Very strong hammer fall. Stamping a hole in the cap??

How is the touch hole below the nipple? The hole on my Shiloh enlarged and I had to have it welded and redrilled. I shot many many rounds through mine over the years. Still using it. Well once this year! 8 for 9 on the board! Not too bad for an old fart that hadn't shot it for 8 months!:D:D

Your nipple is saying: "PLEASE replace me!"
