WTB 58 caliber Minie ball mould

Greetings All. I'm pretty new to all things BP and trying to learn. I recently acquired a Miroku 1863 Springfield that I would like to have as an accurate shooter, preferably with authentic style Minie balls, but the bore is larger than my Lyman mold. The bore measures .583 so I think I need a .582 or .581 mod. (And I could use any advice ya'll might have if that's not correct.) If anyone has a mould that would work that you would part with please let me know.

I first did a bit of a crude measurement by threading an oversized Minie onto a five-inch, 1/4-20 carriage bolt, then driving it into the bore a few inches. With a caliper I got .585 with that method. I then took it to a local machinist (as I should have done in the first place) who measured it with a bore gauge. He got .583.

Moose Moulds makes a .582 they call an International minie.

The international Minie from Moose Molds is a very good minie mold.

On EBay there are Rapine bullet molds. You have to buy all Four. Give all four a try and pick the one that you can use and resell unwanted bullet molds. It is one way to go. [emoji841]

I love my Moose mold these guys turned me on to. Also the moose Juice.
I think they give you a sample with the mold.

Question Guys... A Springfield with a .582?

I am shooting an 1855 and it's bore is .580 but it seems to me most other Muskets shoot smaller Calibers.

Seems to me it would be best to get that muskets bore accurately measured.

I say this because I bough a .577 when I bought one of the those Colt Signature Muskets years ago and bought the Mold I was told to, it was to small.

That rifle liked a bullet sized to .579 and those .577 just rattled themselves down the bore.

The answer for this repro Springfield is yes. I finally sent the gun off to Todd Watts who measured the bore fore me at .5835. So I?m still convinced I need to find a .582 mold.

I appreciate all y?all?s advice. Unless someone out there has such a mold to part with I will probably order Moose Moulds? International Minie with the Old Style base plug to cast a thinner skirt, .045-.050, according to Moose. Please advise if anyone has final thoughts and thanks again!

I've been hesitating to reply in this thread as it's really apples to oranges and I didn't want to be a Debbie Downer.

My very first musket I bought off of gunbroker. It was a Euroarms P53. The barrel was toast. It ended up needing a .584 bullet. And even when I found one (an RCBS-Hogdgon), it still did not shoot worth a darn.

I ended up replacing the barrrel with a Whitacre barrel, and now it is a tack driver.

Now it may very well be that you'll find the right size bullet and your gun will shoot well.

But, you are going to have a limited selection of molds to choose from, and it still might not shoot well.

You might consider a new barrel from Whitacre or Hoyt, or see if they can line your barrel.

Moose Molds has come out with his variation of the Hodgen bullet in .578, .580, and .582. Its not on their web site yet but I heard it from the owners. Give them a shout.

Did you measure the lands or grooves?
I measured my lands by putting in pin gauges. .578 .579 i believe so i size to .577
