Guys (and Gals): I'm interested in learning the fife. What key do you N-SSA fifers play in? What's the best source for a beginner fife? Instruction book?

The vast majority of fifers play in B flat. As for how to learn it, there's an instructional book out there that I'm told is pretty good called the Old Fort Snelling Instruction Book for Fife. http://www.amazon.com/Snelling-Instruction-Minnesota-Historic-Pamphlet/dp/0873510909

However, that being said, there are plenty of resources online as well. One of my favorites is a website run by an old friend back in Rochester called http://www.fifedrum.org

All that being said, I would still recommend getting at least initial lessons from another fifer, otherwise you'll end up with a half dozen bad habits that will only hold you back later on, like me!

Thanks much! Will give the website and the book a look. Will try to pin down one of the good fifers for a session at the next national, but I really need a set of fife bad habits to go with my bagpipe and banjo bad habits.
