I am thinning my collection out lately and have a M1860 Spencer Rifle identified by serial number to Oliver Rockwell, 5th Ohio Independent Company Sharpshooters. I have copies of the Regimental Book showing the issue of the rifle by serial number, the soldiers service record and his pension documents. The soldier served with the unit from Oct. 1862 all the way through discharge in July of 1865. He was present with the unit the entire time except for May and June of 1865 when he was in the hospital. He and this rifle most certainly were with the unit at the Battle of Chickamauga. The rifle shows normal use from being carried in the field for almost 3 years during the war but was very well taken care of. It has the typical hairline crack on the top of the stock wrist as is common on these as the wood of that area was very thin. He scratched hod initials into the receiver and it has a post war magazine follower tube.

These rifles were the state of the art assault rifles of their time. The 5th Ohio Independent Company Sharpshooters served as General Rosecran's HQ security force and were crucial to holding back the confederate army as Union forces retreated from the battlefield at Chickamauga in September of 1863. I figured I would try to find it a good home here first before I put it up for auction.

I am asking $3,950. If interested message me and I can send more photos.
