Okay, bought an original Gallagher carbine at last week's CW show in Franklin, Tennessee. Adding it to my accumulation of shooting irons...the Gallagher has such a vile reputation, I couldn't resist. Acquired 30 brass empties from S&S. Problem: regular .515 solids slide down the barrel yet are a snug fit in the new brass (they require some effort to insert. A long about .518 slug with a heel fits both brass and bore, but is to long the chamber. Query: what's a good bullet for this piece, one which provides good fit in the brass yet is large enough to be a snug in the bore and short enough to chamber?

My thanks. Dave FDox

Dave, you need to slug the bore. My original Gallagher slugged out to 0.438 . I haven't found a bullet that is proper for it yet, but am having good results with the 56-56 Spencer bullet at 0.540. It is a little long, but chambers and is shooting around 3" groups at 50 m and 3.5-4" at 100 m. The original sights are crap and 200m is hit and miss at this point.

I load for a 56-56 and tried to insert a bullet to no avail, alas. Shall see what I have in the way of sizers.

A short heeled (xmas tree) 54 sharps bullet type ........... thinking out of the box

Alas, any Sharps bullet would be too long. I'll try the 56-56 Spencer but suspect the heel will be too wide for the brass.

You could shorten one of the brass cases and then try ........

Hey Bruce,
dont forget a round ball. They work OK out to 100 yards in these. just pack all the 3 ff powder you can along with a "buscuit" of lube ( felt impregnated works good over a thin index card wad then the round ball pressed on top of the case.
