Picked up a musket today and the seller tossed in two moulds. Musket has been hanging on a wall since new and the moulds were found in a tool box. One is a flat based Lyman .50 cal that still had a bullet in it. The other is a hollow base mould, appears to be .58 and is marked with a P H on one block and the numbers 58560 on the other. Both moulds were well oiled when stored and the cavities are in nice shape. Haven't seen one like the .58 before. Anyone know what it is?

To me that looks like a Parker-Hale mold that someone added an attached base plug holder. The P - H and size is right, but from the factory they came with a base plug that has to be removed by hand every time you cast. It's a heavy, shallow-based minnie that shoots well in most guns. Parker-Hale quit making molds before they quit making guns, then sold off to someone in Italy. Lyman started making a shallow based minnie mold, but they weren't exactly the same.

That's my guess.

In the process of cleaning it up and hope to see how it casts this week. Scrubbed the side of the other mould and found it to be the Lyman 518145. Will be keeping it as a web search tells me it's a good bullet for the Smith carbine. Don't have one yet but am looking.

I stand corrected. The P-H is definitely Parker-Hale, but the measurement is too large for the shallow-based minie I'm thinking of. I'll keep my mouth closed until I see either the inside of the mold or a bullet.

You're not confusing the numbers with the .50 cal mould are you?

Somewhere in all of my stuff, I have a Parker-Hale mould that came with one of the P-Hs I bought about 15 years ago. The base plug looks correct. I'll try and dig it out & check the numbers.

Both moulds cleaned up nicely. Finally got around to casting a few today, looks good to me.

Yakiman, how much do those bullets weigh?

The .50 weighs 350 gr, the mini weighs 565 gr,

Sounds right. I found my P-H mould, with the base plug that is removed by hand and it is marked the same way. IIRC, 565 grains is what P-H advertised many years ago.

The P-H minie mold looks like Ohaus/RCBS design.
There was a transition period where their minie molds went from plugs that removed to the ones mounted on the aligning bottom plate.
