50/50 mix for Wilkinson

Im not having much luck using my current bullet lube with Wilkinson bullets for accuracy. I probably am using too much wax.

I was wondering if anyone has tried the 5050 lard/beeswax mix with the Wilkinson? It seems to me that the W's ring is so small that this mix would be too soft to do any good?

How does the lard/bees mix hold up in the heat with Minis? Seems it would turn messy pretty quick

You do not lubricate the groove. Only the bottom ring. It is a compression bullet. Lube in groove stops the compression. Search BB for images and threads on Wilkerson

I shoot the Moose Wilkinson in my Euroarms P53 with Whitacre barrel. It is a tack driver. It is my favorite bullet. It is a dream to cast and being double-cavity you can crank them out.

I am shooting the 577-420 sized to .576. I use 50 grains of 3F Goex. I use 50/50 beeswax/Crisco lube.

When I first tried this bullet I almost gave up on it, as I was using Schuetzen powder because Back Creek was out of Goex at the time. With it, I could only get off about 3 shots before loading started getting crunchy.

Then I switched back to Goex. I can now shoot the bullet indefinitely. Consequently, I will never buy Schuetzen again.

As was noted, the Moose Wilkinson has a very tiny lube groove on the bottom band of the bullet. I dip-lube my bullets. I use a hot plate to melt the lube, and I set the bullets on the hot plate for a few seconds to pre-heat the lead. Then I dip them in the lube and set them flat-side down on wax paper to cool. This way you do not get uneven puddles of lube on the base of the bullet.

By pre-heating the lead and setting them base down, also any excess lube runs out of the huge expansion groove where you do not want lube to be. Also I give the bullet a slight "flick" when I pull it out of the lube to cause an excess of lube to drip off the bullet. It's OK if a little lube gets in the expansion groove but you do not want to pack it full of lube.

The Wilkinson style of bullet works by compression - the main groove is what allows the bullet to collapse and in so doing expand to take up the rifling. If the groove is packed full of lube it cannot compress and won't take up the rifling like it should.

Yes I had said "groove" but I meant "ring". Just seems the ring is so small that I'd think lube wouldnt even be useful.
50 grains of 3F? Whoa, I use 35g. Much over that my bullets go wild. I have an Armi Sport

I use the .547 version of this bullet in my Pedersoli Lorenz. Like Steven, I dip lube only the bottom ring. I can shoot almost indeffinately without cleaning. Well, at least to about 45 rounds. That is the most I've shot at one session without cleaning. I'm using about 45 grains.
