More on Pedersoli Lorenz

Just tried out my new Lorenz Wilkenson bullet today. The barrel twist on it is 1 in 78 which from what I read is pretty slow. Pedersoli says they copied the original. I found I could only get a decent group using 64 grains of Swiss 3F! I was advised that with that slow of twist I needed either a very light bullet or a powerful powder charge to get a faster spin to stabilize the bullet(410 grain bullet). Any comments?

The original k.k. Army load was 62 grains of musket powder. Just saying...

But, I would first look at the hardness of my lead, the sizing of my bullet, the softness of my lube, and the extent to which I filled the compression grooves with lube.

The twist of 1x78" is the same as the original British P-53 muskets.

I think my lead is soft enough. I can easily scrape it with my finger nail. The mould is Moose's Lorenz.
Wilkenson which comes out of the mould at 548 on the button. Tom Crone measured my bore which was 5485. The moose bullets went the barrel easily without sizing at all. I used some soft lube made by Jackie from Back Creek. I made sure there was no lube in the Compression groove. There was lube on the very bottom of the bullet. Is that bad?

I shoot a Moose Wilkinson in my Whitacre P53. I dip-lube them after pre-warming them and most of the lube runs out of the compression groove. I then set them base-down on wax paper so there is but a film of lube on the bottom of the bullets. It's not a problem and is very very accurate.

Unrelated arm, but my Pedersoli P58 also seems to shoot best with a full-sized minie and 60 grains 2F. Basically a service load. Wish I could find a lighter load for it but so far nothing beats that. P58 has a 1:48 twist though.

I started using Jack Venskoske's lube on my Wilkinsons last year it it works great. I size my bullets .001" under bore size and they shoot great.

Makes me wonder what the bullet dia is?
I know about the mold and the stated size but what about the true size dropped. It may be dropping it smaller than you need.
With a .5485 bore a .548 bullet would not be a easy slide down.

Who is selling the Lorenz? I know the regimental quartermaster store and Dixie is selling them too. Both of these places sell them for $1500. Any ideas on what may be the best place to buy one?

I bought mine at Dixie. They are back in stock now. Lock and trigger are superior!!

I just bought a Lorenz from Taylor's & Company. At $1448 (ouch!) they were the cheapest of the three vendors selling them.
