I am currently building a database of original Smith carbine serial numbers from a number of sources. I have received information from some NSSA members as well. The information is to be used in a reference book that I am writing on the Smith carbine. I have uncovered some pretty amazing information since I began collecting information back in October. If anyone owns a Smith carbine and would like to pass on information about their firearms I would be most grateful. I will not be listing the serial numbers with any names. If you would like to share information about your original Smith with please PM through this bulletin board. This is the information I am collecting: Name of manufacturer (American Machine Works or Mass Arms) whether it has sling swivels or a saddle ring and bar, and of course, the serial number. As of today, my database contains more than 475 serial numbers. Thanks in advance for anyone who would like to share their information with me.

I did this with Maynard carbines. Had over 5500 Second Models and 490 First Models. Then lost 35 years of recording them in the house fire. Written record, several floppy disks, two different memory sticks and on CD's in different spots in the house. The CD's got just hot enough in one safe to destroy them yet nothing else. Yeah...... I wasn't about to start over again. I'll email you ya 14 to add to your list when I do my yearly cleaning in Feb.
Good luck and store them online somewhere also.

Thank you PJ. I have my database backed up on external an hard drive, a flash drive and each day I print an updated copy of my list and leave one copy of the list at my daughter's house. What happened to you is my worst fear.

Have you recorded any yet with both sling swivels and a sling side bar? 1000 were redone for the state of Massachusetts and they didn't change out the butt and barrel swivels.

Not so far Bruce. Thanks for the information. I have come across some great information about a half dozen civilian purchases and one with a single digit serial number from Mass Arms. This has been an interesting project and I am grateful to the NSSA members who have shared information with me.

Lou,

I guess you were asking me -
No the barrel isn't back from Bobby yet and I don't look for it until after Christmas.

Merry Christmas

I will be visiting a collector after the holidays, sometime in January, who has an extensive collection of Smiths. I can't wait to see what he has. I also found another civilian issue today with a two digit serial number from Mass Arms. I have run across some really neat variations. I am really glad I decided to do this project. The database continues to grow.
