Yet again I've been educated. Never knew M.1842s were still being assembled at Springfield the year before the introduction of the 1855 rifle-musket and the year rifling of '42s began. Sources assert 1855 was the last year for the '42, but maybe that was a fiscal 1855....

I've got an 1843 dated Harper's Ferry 1842 lock but I've never seen an 1843 dated barrel. 1844 seems to be the earliest date finished guns were assembled and I suspect the locks were dated when completed and put into inventory.
