A question - were original Springfield 1861 or 1863 rifle-muskets issued, in any numbers, with a rear sight blade with a peep hole drilled in them? Thanks.

A small hole in the leaf of the sight only starts to appear in the 1864 Springfield series. It then continues on and on thru the Springfield models.

But there are Springfield rifle-musket variants with a legitimate rear peep site blade?

Yes but the hole has small notch that replaces the extra 300 yard blade and it's too big to be considered a true peep site.

Jim Brady is correct.

........ it's too big to be considered a true peep site.

Guess that depends on who you ask???

Here's the sight in question. It's on an original gun, the question has arisen as to whether or not this IS an original configuration.

Sights is in itself a great field of/for study. I could never figure out that invisible Springfield sight (thus went with and stayed with Enfield). It's ironic sights are a subject at all if you've ever watched an infantry fight like many of our members have where everybody and their dog is spewing ammo like mad Irishmen. Except for my friend Art, who when his battery was overrun was reduced to firing one round at a time as each time he pulled the trigger on his M-16 he also hit his magazine release button and had to reload the hard way.

That is a correct sight for an M-1863 Type II Springfield (AKA M-1864)

Also note that the lock assembly issued with this sight is dated 1864 or 1865.
