Brass Framed Remington 1858

Am I correct in my assumption that the Pietta brass framed Remington 1858 revolver is not legal for N-SSA use? I have one that I bought before I joined N-SSA. I saw where someone is selling a pair of them on the Buy Sell forum, but N-SSA legality didn't come up in that thread. I do not see it listed in the approved arms list and have heard that is is essentially a repro of something that never was (A Confederate copy of the 1858 but done in brass (Bronze?) due to shortage of iron). I don't currently shoot revolver, but might start. It'd be nice if I could shoot the one I already own, but I'm thinking it's not legal. Thoughts?

Hal - Even though the brass framed Remington you have is not allowed for use in the N-SSA, you may want to keep it for dry-fire practice. That way you will have essentially the same revolver but save on the wear of your tuned competition revolver.

Things often show up in the For Sale section that are not approved for N-SSA use but still shoots the Holy Black and is fun.

I guess I looked right over that, Steve. I went right down to the Piettas and didn't see it. I didn't look at the ones above them.

I was thinking about getting Karen a Spiller and Burr like you bought. She shot this brass Remington last weekend. I was thinking the Spiller and Burr would be a little lighter to hold and a little less recoil being a .36 instead of .44. I don't know how it would shoot. Waiting on you to find that out.

Dear Hal:

The modern made Italian brass frame Remmie revolvers are "fantasy revolvers" as none were ever made back in the ole days.

The Number #1 complaint of those that buy modern made brass framed copies of the '51 Navy Colt is that sooner or later, they tend to "shoot loose," i.e. the brass frame stretches and the revolver is converted into a wall hanger only revolver.

Now, if you have a lot of money to invest in a revolver, I highly recommend the Pietta "Shooters Revolver," which as far as I can learn, is an exact copy of the original Remmie 1858.

The "Shooters Revolver"is very accurate (probably due to its gain twist rifling in the barrel.) However, they have gotten "Zero" publicity-which is a shame.

Because they are so expensive, from time to time Dixie Gun Works puts them on sale, and that is the time to buy one:

My understanding is that the Shooters Revolver is N-SSA Approved.

Hey Hal, shot my Spiller and Burr last weekend. Best group was about a 4" group off a bench at 25 yards with 12 grains 3F. Shot about 18 inches high.

Increase the powder charge and it will shoot lower.

As I increased from 12 grains the groups opened up and went higher. I quit at 16 grains 3F.

Brass frames stretch and go out of time.

They probably don't stretch. What happens is the cylinder bashes the frame and dents it, which opens up the cylinder gap:
