Would this be a legal "cut-down" 1842?

One of our newer team members would like to shoot smoothbore. Another team member has this "cut-down" 1842. I will be bringing it to our local skirmish for SAC approval at our April skirmish, with hopes that it can be used at the Nationals.

I am not familiar with "cut-down" 1842 smoothbores. This is based on an Armisport 1842. Does this look like a legal configuration?

Also, the arm came with a shield under the percussion cone. I thought I remembered reading in the rules that such devices were not allowed, but I could not find it as I just re-read section 19 on small arms. Are such things allowed?

The SAC has 3 different barrel lengths approved for cut down M1842s, called Macon Conversion Smoothbores.

Acceptable lengths I know of are 30", 34" and 36". Everything else about them is stock 1842.

The 30" version doesn't have a middle barrel band and the nose cap is held in place by a screw instead of the
normal band spring. Complete details are available on an Inspection sheet, attached.

Don't have enough time on the job to comment on the flash guard. I'd think that is an accessory and would be a better question for the IG.

What length is your barrel?

Hey Bob, thanks for the reply.

This one measures 30-3/8" from the muzzle to the back of the breech/root of tang.

The front band is held on with a screw.

There is no bayonet lug.

I believe this is an attempt at a Type I conversion. I don't know why someone would go to the trouble to make one of these and bungle the wood so badly, but hopefully that won't stand against it's approval. Unless they went to the field that way originally?

If our regional inspector passes it at our April skirmish, is there more that needs to be done at the National level to get a SAC card, or is it all approved locally? Our team member would like to use this gun at the Nationals in May.

Steve - Once inspected at the Regional level, and if all things pass, the individual can be given a "Temporary Conditional Approval". This is a paper that can state that the arm has been inspected, and that it is OK to use in the N-SSA's competitive matches until the permanent Small Arms Individual Approval Card is issued. Or, if there are corrections to be made the Temporary Approval will list those corrections. Once the corrections are made the individual will resubmit the arm to the Regional SAC Inspector who will verify the corrections, and then notify me that the SAC Card can be issued. The Temporary Approval should have an expiration date of 6 months. The Regional inspection sheets are sent to me for final review. Once that is done, and again if all things are acceptable, I issue the SAC Card. No permanent SAC Cards are issued on the Regional level.
