44 and 36 Conical Bullets

Rapine Bullet Mould Manufacturing Company made moulds for conical bullets for .44 and .36 cap and ball revolvers. I understand that they are no longer in business. Does anyone know if anyone else makes moulds for these type of bullets?

I just bought a Lee #90382 twin cavity conical bullet mold I found on ebay. Brand new in the box for 25 bucks + $8 to ship it.. The bullet size is .450" and will work on most .44's except the Ruger, which is .456". The Lee part number for the .456" twin cavity conical bullet is #90384. There's one on ebay right now for 25 bucks, new in the box plus nominal shipping. Hope this helps. Knowledge is power.

Lee claims the are more accurate than round balls. Is that true?

after trying almost everything i could find over the years i ended up back shooting a round ball. of course after its squeezed into a cylinder its more like a round nose round bottom wad cutter. another plus is a round ball generates less recoil and doesnt beat the gun up as bad. just one guys opinion.

I can shoot either out of my revolver, and can't claim one is more accurate than the other. However, if I shoot a conical, the bullet comes up close to the rim of the cylinder, and I don't feel the need to use any filler. Your results may vary...

At 25 yards I don't see much difference in accuracy between round balls and conicals but at 50 yards the conicals are much more consistent in my Pietta Remington. Most of the time I shoot the Rapine conical, sized to .454, with 20 grains FFFg (Goex) and it's nice not needing to use any filler with these bullets. When using roundballs in my Remington, I use .457 diameter. The .450 diameter Lee bullet may be too small for the chambers of most Remington repros since a .454 roundball (which is supposed to be shaved down slightly when loading) is often recommended for these revolvers. If the .450 Lee bullet is not a tight fit I'd go with the .456 diameter Lee bullet sized down to whatever your chambers happen to be.

Here is a good place to get that Lee Mold. Midsouth had it for about $18. That fellow who sells Lee molds on Ebay for $25 is making a killing!
