I thought the "caustic caps used by Confederates" was a myth. I was under the impression from an expert that the erosion happened post war from holidays, celebrations and the resultant neglect from such actions.

For what it's worth, back when I started skirmishing someone gave me me a couple thousand Eley caps that dated to the turn of the 20th century or before. Of course, I shot a skirmish with a tin of them. All but one went off, and the breech of my musket started rusting before I left the line at Winchester. Those things were aggressively corrosive! If the caps they used in the war were that bad, it's surprising the breeches of originals are in such good shape today.
