I just bought a 1860 catalog for the Maynard Model 1 in Gettysburg. $3 at the Farnsworth House bookstore. It shows a stopper catridge, a regular cartridge with an extra side flange with opening to attach a leather thong and iron hook. It has an ignition hole. Was this used as a refillable cartrdge or as a way to use the firearm as a muzzleloader?

As a relative "late-comer" to skirmishing (1973-74), and having my first exposure to shooting Smith carbines (1978), it was my understanding from discussions with Mike Yeck and others that in the days before anyone began making replica cartridges for the Smith (not necessarily in the 1960s), a similar device was used permitting Smith carbines to be loaded from the muzzle.

Yes as a muzzle loader with round balls.
