Question to the Smith Carbine shooters

I'm a former skirmisher and hope to get back to shooting next year. In the mean time I have started having molds made for authentic Civil War era revolver bullets. So far I have molds for the Johnston & Dow Contract .44 conical and the Colt Cartridge Works .36 conical.

I'm considering a mold for original style Smith Carbine bullets, mainly because I'd like one for myself. But, I have to order at least 32 each time. (These are being made by LEE Precision, BTW).

Is there a market in the N-SSA for a period correct Smith bullet? I would have these made at .518 so they can be sized to your gun as most folks shoot at .515 or .516. But, they wont be too big to use unsized by the non-competition casual shooter. The weight would be 364 grains.

If it's a good steel mold I would be interested. I have had bad issues with there aluminum molds. But if it's steel I would buy one

Might I suggest you contact Al Nelson (Swede) at NOE Bullet molds. If I remember correctly you can get a group buy going for around 15 molds purchases. Tooling cost are $300 for a new design I think. Once the cherry is made Al can make it any size you want it with his CNC equipment. They are aluminium but they drop perfect bullets every time. I own at least 6 of him molds and the guys on Cast Boolits.com use and buy his molds all the time. I really find it hard to believe no one here seems to know about NOE......Night Owl Enterprises. I just had him make me a Smith Carbine mold just before nationals. It's actually a 50-70 bullet but it shoots good in my new fast twist barrel liner. Cast exactly at .517 with pure lead and drops at 470 grains which is a bit heavy but very accurate.

I told Al I would try and tell folks here about his molds. Most of what he carries in stock is for center-fire rifles but he said he would start stocking some CW type molds if people showed interest. Just a FYI......Al' s a great guy and if he wasn't in Colorado I think more people would know about him because he would be at the Fort.

If I have these made, I'll let everyone know on this page and others. My .44 and .36 molds are selling very well. Once I have them sold off, I'll have the capitol to invest in having a batch of the Smith molds made up.
