I know that early in the war, both sides wore quite a variety of uniforms. The Confederates especially wore whatever was at hand throughout the war, even if there was a standard.

Even for units that choose to shoot in full battle dress, with official style coats and pants, there seems to be a variation in shirts. Was there a standard issue shirt for either side?

According to Echos of Glory, Arms Equipment of the Union, the Yankees issued wool flannel pull over shirts. The examples shown are a cream colored material. The book also shows a blue checkered shirt issued by the state of Massachusetts.

The Confederate book shows a British Army shirt that came through the blockade.

Domet flannel is listed as a standard shirt. Domet Flanne s a wool/cotton woven fabric. A flannel buffing wheel is pretty close to the texture.
