View Full Version : Original P53 Enfield Type 3 Nipple Thread Size

I have an original P53 Type 3 Enfield recently re-barreled by Dan Whitacre. He recycled the original breech, and the original nipple is well worn. The thread size is not the 15/16-24 size I have on his other barrels. Does anyone know what size nipple original Birmingham Enfields used? Does anyone know where to get them.

Thanks,

I would try Track of The Wolf.

They were very helpful with a metric nipple problem I had a few years ago.

It should be 5/16-18. Ampco, and others, make them.

Jim,

The British thread was based off of a 55 degree pitch.
Most modern threads are a 60 degree pitch.
You may want to chase a modern 5/16 x 18 tap into the bolster to get a modern nipple to fit best.
Hope this may help.
My best,
Blair

I recommend that you make an over-seas call to my friend James F. Hallam in Surrey, England and present your question and need to a gentleman who will provide an accurate answer. Mr Hallan is a member of the British Worshipful Company of Gunmakers and has his business and shop 250 yards from the Bisley (England) Shooting Range since 1977. He deals in all rifled arms in the 1850 to 1950 date range.

Here is Mr. Hallam's contact information --

I will be in the U.K. this June (2017) and would be glad to bring anything back for you. If Jim has your part, I would telephone from his shop and you could decide if you want it or not want it.

I hope this gets you what you need.

Always fun to convert a $10 problem into a $100 problem. I'll be there later this summer. I'll try to sqeeze in a visit to the worshipfuls inbetween my visits to the queen and Elton John.

Hi Jim Cunningham --

Jim, I'm familiar with the British threads that were used during the American Civil War period and believe them to be Whitworth design, which was the standard that manufactures complied with. Even Mass. Arms Co. complied with British Whitworth threads in the arms they produced, particularly the Maynard gov't contract carbines.

My family lives in the U.K. and I will ask one of my cousins to speak with James Hallam to inquire if he should have two nipples of the correct size, one for you, and the other for me. If he does have the two nipples we desire, my cousin will purchase both and send them to me. I in turn will provide you with one of the two at no cost to you, I will even pay the postage charges to you in New York. I did notice you are not skirmishing with N-SSA,so I won't expect to see you at the 2017 Spring National matches. If you would give me until later next week to make my calls, I will be in a position to tell you if the British made nipples could be located and purchased.

Regards,

Webb

Thank You Kindly, John Holland ---

As you probably noticed Jim Cunningham lives in New York so if Ed or Phil (Sr.) have them in stock, that should be a winner for all parties.

I'm a collector now, as apposed to being a skirmisher (except in court), so I would prefer, if at all possible, to have one made in Birmingham.

Thanks for being a problem solver and the skill with which to be problem solving.

P.S. The two Siess boys lost there father who started the business, but their mother, who is Mary Ann, is the nicest lady on the telephone you could ever meet.

Well they were -- until they quit handing out the free bagels.

I remember those Bagels....I never knew a Bagel could actually be fit to eat until I got one of those "Genuine New York City Bagels" as handed out by S&S!

Thank you all for the information. I frankly miss skirmishing, but simply don't have the time. I wish there was a "home guard" division of skirmishing where I could attend a few local skirmishes annually. Unfortunately my work schedule doesn't allow me to devote the requisite time to make a significant contribution to
the organization. Thanks for all the information.
