I was wondering if it were allowed by our rules to add a mark to the high point of the rear of the barrel to aide in lining up the front sight on the targets. The question was posed to the National Inspector General, Wade Huffman. Here is the response:

Scott, Mr. Holland has forwarded your question to me about adding a mark on the breech of your 42 to act as a rear sight or sighting point. As you know the model 42 smoothbore Springfield is a "front sight" only arm therefore adding a mark of any kind to use as a rear sight or sighting point is not allowed if you read rule 14.9.1 (L) it states:

Notwithstanding the above provisions, no modifications of any sort may
be made to the original as-issued dimensions, form, nature, or location of
any sights affixed to a smoothbore musket to be used in any smoothbore
competition.

I have seen several that file on the rear band or on the tang.
don't know if it is OK but there is no way I would cut into the tang on my guns.
