Well it a removable end cap. The barrel is male threaded and the plug is of a female cup. This gives you a flat breech area and removable for required cleaning. Where the original 42 had a male plug that went into a female barrel just like the 61 and such Springfield's Hope this helps.

If any one is interested I have a cut down 42 Barrel for sale. The Good is 24 5/8 long The bad Needs nipple, barrel is nickel plated. No date showing , but may be under plating. Will need reline. Price 75.00 as is!

You may have to go with a Whitacre '42 barrel to have a separate breech plug, but remember his barrels are made to "drop in" fit original stocks, so if you want it to fit your ArmiSport stock means you will have the rework the stock channel, possibly do other modifications at the breech? But using the Whitacre barrels has another advantage. You could easily wait up to a year to get a new Italian made barrel shipped from Armisport, just ordering the barrel alone. Last spare barrel I bought was from JRA. That was 2007 and the barrel cost $225.

Taylor and Company will sell a 1842 one piece breech and plug.
I can make a Armisport barrel with the one piece breech. It will fit into the Armisport stock.
