I was looking at a New Model Remington pat. Sept 14th 1858 this evening. It is very worn but I think it is a very early pistol. It was supposedly found in a field long ago by someone's Grandfather. Serial number is 14990

Anyone have any information on this serial number??

Doing a little reading about the pistol, according the markings on the barrel, pat. date, it should be a New Model however it does not say New Model on the barrel. The serial number is also before what I have seen listed on the net as the the range of New Model Serial numbers.

Hallo!

I will see today if I can find my Remington reference books today in boxed storage.

Can you post any pictures?

But, off the top of my head...

The "PATENTED SEPT. 14, 1858/E. REMINGTON & SONS, ILION, NEW YORK, U.S.A/NEW MODEL." stamp is on the M1863's in two versions (different than than that used on the Model 1861 ("Old Model"). The first of the evolving "hybrid" M1863's roughly 12,000 or so had that stamped with the "NEW MODEL" added as a separate stamping.

Remington transitioned or "evolved" the M1863 out of the M1861 over time using and mixing old and new parts between serial numbers 10,500 and about 22,000 between 1863 and 1864. Such as starting with M1861 frames, cone front sight instead of blade, barrel markings, etc. on the first 12,000 or so. Those NUG are found with the "PATENTED SEPT. 14, 1858/E. REMINGTON & SONS, ILION, NEW YORK, U.S.A" which would get the separate added "NEW MODEL" stamp before they replaced those stamps with the full new version.

Hallo!

Guestimate puts production of Remington "Army" revolver serial numbers 14,186-17,490 as March of 1863.

Thanks for the information.....

It does have a cone front sight. It does not have New Model stamped on it. It just has a two line stamping on the barrel. I showed the pictures to Bootsie yesterday and he pointed out that it looks like it had been wire brushed which removed all the patina the gun had. It also has some cylinder rotation issues and 4 out 6 nipples are corroded away on one side. Are there gunsmiths that will work on these pistols? The wire brush thought goes along with the story behind this pistol being found in a field years and years ago.

I will try and get some pictures posted soon.
