Your H&P is a Type 1 and I believe most if not all were originally rifled. The Type 2s were smoothbore and the rear sight was mounted like the '61s, not backward like the one you have. Your rear sight is mounted correctly for a type 1. Type 2s also have a different hammer and bolster.

I'll take the Common Rifle, if still available. Instructions?

Hi Dan,
This would be the New Jersey Type 2 Alteration. p. 72 in Moller discusses the Type 1, which is a more rounded bolster. The Type 2's (p. 73 in Moller), are more triangular, smoothbore, but someone probably turned the site around thinking it was wrong.

You might try interlibrary loan to get the books to find your answer as well!

Long story short, some of the NJ Type 2 alterations with clean out screw were not rifled, but that seems to be the minority with these. All NJ alterations have a clean out screw. (Moller; Vol. 3, p.72)

Shoot me an email, and I can get you more information tonight or tom before work.

I just thought I would let everyone know that I went looking for the Moller Volume III via intra-library loan and it was not available. But they pointed me to an electronic version available via Google Books:

https://books.google.com/books?id=y7_DzNMrDqsC&lpg=PP1&pg=PT233#v=onepage&q&f=false

I'm looking forward to reading about the H&P conversion from Moller.

Hopefully this is useful to you.

Edit: Well, sadly, the book is not completely available. Parts are missing.

You can purchase the full book at the above link for about $80 as an ebook, which I have done.
