Since the Romano bullet is a copy of the original Maynard bullet there can't be any "patent" issues. Therefore, I would get a sample of the bullet from someone who has one of the moulds and then contact Moose Moulds. I have a lot of confidence in Moose being able to make whatever a customer needs!

Accurate has been very helpful for me, in creating custom design.

Wow, the only reference I have on hand for a .36 Romano bullet design is the #366158 silhouette in an old Rapine catalog.
Do you have the info needed for a mold maker to give you the dimensions you need?
Or, maybe what if oh could it work...
Could a Lee aluminum block pistol mold be lapped out to .366" diameter?

Moose Moulds also makes a 3 cavity .36 Maynard mould. Have you looked at their design?

What diameter and weight is an original 36 Maynard projectile?

Bob, How about stopping by and trying out my original mould for that info?

If you cannot find the other, maybe try a Lee 6-cavity bullet mold (Size 401-175-TC) truncated cone for the 40 S&W, and size them down to what diameter you need? And Lyman and RCBS both offer sizing dies from .308 to .379.

Of course, if you don't like the truncated cone like Romano makes, Saeco makes a 2-cavity mold for a .365 dia. 100 grain round nose bullet? Or is 100 grains still too heavy?

Lee makes a 2-cavity mold for a .365 dia. 95-grain round nose bullet:

Hello, Lou:

Will send you some cast from my Romano blocks. They may be too long for your twist.

The "nominal" 35 Romano bullet details are:
Gradual, continuous radius nose to a rounded tip.
Flat base with NO rounded edge.
TWO square grease grooves with NO front driving band.
Base to center of first grease groove is .207" and base to center of second, top grease groove is .350".
Overall length is .845" or 2.4 calibers.
As-cast diameter on 30 lead to 1 tin alloy is .3675 -.3680".
A half-thousandth larger and 5 grains heavier in 60:1 alloy.
Weight as-cast is 195gr. -196gr. in 30:1.

Jim Wimbish and Bob Gorsky might add to this and be more specific.
The Owsiak bullet that Wimbish uses seems fine in his Romano 35, but please check with him for dimensions and HIS especially twist. The Owsiak base appears rounded.

The issue is bullet length compatibility with the 24" rifling twist in your ORIGINAL 1865.
The Romano bullet is longer than the original one.
Romano's 35 Maynard twists are either 22" with early Hoyt barrel blanks or 18" with Larry's barrels.

That creates FOUR INCHES of twist difference in Romano barrels and SIX inches if the ORIGINAL twist is compared. That is a LOT of range.

Romano 35 caliber bullets IN Romano barrels appear to have a bit of TIPPING at 100 yards, but the group size is not enlarged. Most tell me hat they ignore it.

Perhaps someone here can give you the LENGTH of the ORIGINAL, single groove 35 Maynard bullet so that the Romano can be tip-shortened, if it tips.

Regards,
Kevin Tinny

The original Mass Arms molds drop 36 Maynard bullets at .373" dia. +/- a few thousandths. Accurate Molds makes 36 Maynard molds in 153 and 180 grain weights. They will make them any diameter you specify. I discussed this with Lou at nat'ls but he wants to try a Romano mold. To each his own.

Kevin Tinny is casting up some for me to try. I am aware of the Accurate molds, I wanted to try some bullets before ordering one. Unfamiliar with .36 and proceeding cautiously

I have had a Romano mould and currently have an Owsiak mould. The bullets are only slightly different. The Owsiak mould is a 4 cavity. I size my bullets to .366" and the nominal weight is about 215 grains. The bullet has two lube grooves and a small flat on the nose for casting. I am currently using 23.5 grains of 3f which gives me the correct OAL without requiring filler. My barrel is a gain twist made by John Bly. I have never had any problems getting the 36 Maynard to shoot consistently. I have no experience with the original 36 barrels made by Maynard.

Thanks, Bruce. I was just curious how the originals differ from what I shoot.

If you want me to stop by and shoot the s**t, I'm in. I'm sure there will be lots of cool things to ooh and aah over.
