I recently was told of a .56 caliber Ballard carbine with all metal parts tinned. I have not located any info on tin finishing of Ballard carbines although I have heard of other CW arms being tinned for Naval or maritime related service. Is there anyone in the N-SSA that has heard of or has an opinion on the subject. I know that asking for an opinion can open a can of worms.

Is it a Dwight Chapman? Carbine? All but a few went to the state of Kentucky. I don't know why they would have finished them like you mention. Most likely it was done after the war.

Yes, it is one of the Dwight Chapin carbines, assembled by Ball & Williams after Dwight went under. I agree that the tinning was probably done post war. I heard from a member who stated that he has seen some tin plated arms with New Jersey markings that were reportedly used by the Coast Guard :?: although there is no proof to this theory.
