I need some help with a .69 caliber 1816 Springfield bolster conversion that looks like an H & P conversion but doesn't have a rear sight. The Springfield lock is dated 1830. As far as I can tell the bore is smooth. 4165 Is this an H & P without rear sight or some other bolster conversion? Thanks,
Mike

Your musket is one of the chambered breech alterations done by a shop other than H&P. The lack of a rear sight is correct as it should not be sighted.

Any idea of what shops did this type of conversion besides H & P

There were several. D.C. Hodgkins, Henry Leman, N.J. State Armory, Field & Horton (for N.J.), J. Wurfflein, J. Hitchcock and probably others unknown. A lot of these are documented in Moller's "American Military Shoulder Arms". Yours looks like a Wurfflein if I had to guess.

Thanks for the help. Can you tell me which volume of "American Military Shoulder Arms" this information is in?
