Hi, I have a question, I have looked and can not find the answer to my question.
I was thinking of purchasing a 1858 Remington with a 5 1/2" barrel just for fun. But didn't know if I could use it at a shoot, if I ever wanted to. It is made by Pietta. Please let me know. Thanks.

I do believe the 8" barrelled Remington is the only N-SSA legal length.

In the approved arms document, there is no mention of barrel lengths. The more detailed sheets that the SAC committee uses would have the acceptable dimensions; you can ask any SAC inspector or failing that, John Holland. I do believe though, that they all did have 8" barrels.

A number of guns, such as the Colt 1862 and Remington new model belt revolver do sport shorter barrels and ARE approved. If you are looking at getting another one with shorter barrel, that would be the way to go, I'd think.

The barrel length on the SAC sheet for the Remington in .44 caliber is 8".
