My school bought me 5 brand new replica 1853 Enfield Rifle-muskets to teach drill with in my Civil War class, and I want to build/buy/get a crate like the ones used during the war to store the muskets in. Problem is, while I know there were dimensions in a Military Collector and Historian article not too many years back, I cannot find my copy of that, nor can I find any plans or pictures.

I know origianl boxes held 20 guns. Ideally I would have one similar but to hold 8-10 muskets. Ideally for the class 8 muskets would be best.

Anyway, any help out there?

Page 4 of "an Introduction to Civil War Firearms" by Coates and Thomas has the diagram.

I have that book at school, so will look tomorrow. Thanks Phil.

Anyone know a maker who makes this type of box?

Chris - I saw several different sized boxes in a small shop in Gettysburg. The shop was just across from the Horse Soldier and featured re-enactment items. Can't remember the name of the shop but they did have different crates on hand. Chris, this was probably last year or so when I saw the items.

Chris,

Here is a little info for you...
Two Enfield Rifle Musket shipping cases were recovered from the wreck (June of 1862) of the "Modern Greece" off the coast of NC. They were packed 24 guns to the case.
The broken remains of guns, enough for ten additionl cases were also recovers. The brakes on the guns were where the center supports were in the cases.

Just thought you might find this interesting seeing how you have Enfield's.
