Being new to Maynards, I wonder if someone out there can help me?
I have a .50 cal Maynard. What moulds are available, weight and dia.?
What loads work best? What type of lube, etc. Thanks for any and all help.

If yours is an original, the bore is most likely .513-.518, but you should slug it to measure it. Then use a bullet .001 larger than the bore. My bore measures .514, so I cast a .518 bullet, then resize it to .515 when cool.

There are several moulds that will throw good bullets that shoot very well. The Lyman 515141 or 518145 (no longer made) cast a 360 grain RNFP bullet with adequate lube grooves. Most bullets in the 320-380 grain range shoot very well. I use pure soft lead, but some like harder lead (50/50 wheel weights), but I have not had any better success with alloys, and my gun shoots better than I can hold it. Lube with MCM, SPG or similar black powder lube. Load over 23-28 grains of 3F black powder. If you are using full capacity brass, use a filler over the powder such as cream of wheat or cream of rice, grits, etc. Good luck!

I currently shoot a second model Maynard (original, late war production). I shoot the 350 grain Rapine bullet (soft lead) sized from .520 to .518, lubed with SPG. My choice for the powder charge is 35 grains of 3F GOEX in a brass casing. I tried the black plastic casings but got better consistency from the brass cases. This powder/bullet combination shoots very well both at 50 and 100 yards.

Hi,
I shoot a Mike Owsiak bullet (519) sized to 518 he also makes a 517

both come in 2 cavity moulds (353 gr of pure lead)

I use 24.5 gr 3f with MCM lube at both 50/100 yds with reduced capacity brass and no filler...much easier

and I shoot a Bly barrell but the load works in originals as well
