Hello:

The 515139 may not hold enough lube.

As an alternative, John Bly modifies 515141 by reducing its length from three grease grooves to two grease grooves and about 368 grains. These cast to .517" - .518", depending upon alloy and should size to your needs. Please consider contacting him.

I have used the 515139 over 10 years in a Smith carbine without a problem. The 515141 does have a bigger groove but if you cut one groove off to shorten it I don't think that its 2 grooves will have hold more lube than a 515139's 3 grooves.

The 515139 is available for $61.61 at http://midsouthshooterssupply.com or for $75.49 at http://midwayusa.com .

Years ago I cut down a 515141 for a Spencer. It shoots great in Spencers and Smiths, but it is pretty hopeless in Maynards. I've tried it in two of them (an original and a Harpers Ferry). Wouldn't hold the black in either one, no matter what load I tried.

Some of those 515141 molds make bullets as small as .512-.513 diameter. That is too small for most Civil War 50 caliber carbines. I generally recut them to make .517-.518 diameter bullets. The one I modified to shoot in my 1st Mod Maynard with a Hoyt lined barrel is the best shooting bullet I've ever found for my Maynard, bar none. I have not tried it in a 2nd model as I gave up on them because I could not see the front sight anymore.

Feedback from others who have bought the modified 515141 molds is that they are shooting the best they ever have with their Maynards.
