I'm trying to resurrect a basket-case jager. Does anyone know the screw size for the hammer? How about the thumb screw for the adjustable rear sight?

The man to ask about the Jager is either Ed Schneeman Or Don Dixon Both are very knowledgeable on this arm. R Filbert

You might try sending spacecowboy a PM or a e-mail also.

Chris,

The Austro-Hungarian Empire did not go Metric until 1870, and the army did not go Metric until 1871 with the adoption of the Werndl breech loading rifle. The mesurements for everything prior to the Werndel were based upon Schritt, which is a military pace of 29.5 inches. So, neither Metric nor inch thread screws will necessarily fit Austro-Hungarian muzzle loading arms of any pattern. Even if an inch or metric screw will fit the hole, the pitch of the threads is different. The only Schritt based parts that I know of that are being made today are nipples for Muster 1851 Swiss Feldstutzers. Your only real recourse for your restoration is to get original Austrian parts. However, since the System Lorenz weapons were, in fact, a system, the appropriate screws -- or internal lock parts -- from any of the System Lorenz weapons should fit yourJägerstutzen. But, these were all artisanal weapons. Your milage may vary, particularly if someone has buggered it up before you got it.

The real toughie is the screw for the rear sight. That was only used on the Jägerstutzen and the Dornstutzen, and there weren't many of those made.

Thanks Don;
The hammer screw turned out to be 8-32, so maybe someone retapped that. The rear sight screw was broken off and was drilled out offcenter, so that will have to be tapped. Since I have neither the side piece or an original screw right now. . . I will have to make something approximately correct.

If you end up needing an original complete base with screw, let me know.

Bruce,

Might you have the slider for a Jägerstutzen rear sight?
