I recently purchased an original Sharps new model 1865 percussion carbine which I intend to shoot. It is starting to develop a crack in the stock at the point where the lower butt plate retaining screw goes into the stock. The crack goes all the way through the stock (side to side) and is about 2 inches long (back to front). Is there anything that can be done to prevent further cracking?
Is there any brand of gunstock oil that is recommended for moisturizing or revitalizing the wood of this 140+ year old gun?
Does anyone specialize in repairing gunstocks?
Thanks, CW
