Actually, the term "Artillery Model" Smith Carbine is a misnomer! It is a term invented by collectors to distinguish between the early models with sling swivels versus the later versions with a saddle bar. Once the Cavalry discovered how painfully inconvenient it was to carry the Smith Carbines on slings only an order was issued instructing the contractors to eliminate the sling swivels and change to saddle bars only. There are even some rare versions that have both sling swivels and a saddle bar. Just some interesting history I thought some of you may enjoy. Therefore, "Artillery Model" is a convenient term and a part of our lexicon which is here to stay!

John, is correct. The correct term for the early ones with swivels is the First Model Smith and the one with the sling bar the Second Model. The first is much more desirable as a collector because they made much less of them.
