View Full Version : lube mix goof up

It seems I added too much wax to my bullet lube. After a couple dozen shots, the wax coats the rifling and the shots go wild. The mix is mostly FG and I have no idea what else I put into it (made it a year ago).
Does anyone know what I can add to soften up the mixture or should I just toss it. I was thinking something along the line of extra lard or Ballistrol or?

Thx

Well, what do you normally make your lube out of? I make mine out of Crisco and Beeswax. If it was too waxy, I'd just add more Crisco.

Bear in mind that period lube recipes were frequently much more waxy than what we use today. I find SPG is close in consistency to the 1:3 tallow/beeswax mixture called out in the US Ordnance manual. The British eventually went to 100% beeswax.

It is mostly SPG (I don't know where the FG came from....) mixed with beeswax. I assume I added too much beeswax. I don't have anymore SPG to add. Do you think adding more lard will make it less waxy?

You can also add vegetable oil. I have done that to loosen up a lube mixture.
