I just cast some rounds for my Maynard last week with a new Lyman mold. The mold is a 515141DV. The rounds are coming out to be around .508-.510. They seem small. Use pure lead. I have been using a friends old Lyman mold number 515141A. I ordered my mold because of the numbers of his mold. The old mold cast a round to .515, to .517, has 2 lube rings and is 385 grains. My new one has 3 lube rings, 1/4 inch longer, and is 450 grains. No were near the same round, but same numbers. I call Lyman and got some lady that was no help at all. I am very disappointed with Lyman.
Anyone ever had his issue? Ideas?

Thanks

My old Lyman has 3 grooves and is 425 gr. Are you sure your friend's is a 515141 Lyman?

That's very interesting. My friend does not know when he got his mold but it %100 says 515141A on it. Thanks for the pic.

Also, do you know what yours mikes out to be, and do you shoot it in a Maynard?

Drops around .517 from what I remember. I got it along with a large group of molds from the estate of a family friend. Tried it once years ago, along with the 515139, when I was shooting a Smith Carbine.

The 515141 is the bullet for the 50/70 Gov't cartridge and weighs around 450 grains cast in pure lead. I've seen them cast bullets as small as .512 dia. but never smaller than that. For several years I've been modifying them by shortening them to a two groove bullet that casts about 370 grains and recutting them to .518" diameter. It is the best shooting bullet I've ever found for a Maynard. I try to pick up used ones cheap but they are hard to find these days. Everyone I've sold them to has been pleased with their results. I'm not the first to make this modification as I learned about it from another skirmisher. If you can't get any satisfaction from Lyman I could modify it for you. Send a PM if interested.

Sounds like a nice little round. Do you know if anyone has tried this bullet in a Smith? Recently bought mine back for my daughter to shoot.

Maybe that's what my buddies mold was cut down and he picked it up with 2 groves. His is a good round out both Maynards.
Thanks for the offer John. I will contact Lyman back this week, but if I do not get anywhere I may be looking you up. The round I cast is a little hard to push through with a dow rod and just leaves marks on the round. I worry my barrel will get leaded up.
