Is anyone familiar with the war photo of the young dead rebel in the trenches of Petersburg. I believe its entitled "dead rebel in the trenches of fort Mahone". Hes on his back and was shot through the head. Theres a musket laying next to him and the tip of the barrel is bent. It looks like an enfield variant. Can anyone tell me what kind of rifle this is.

If it's the image I think you are referring to I believe it is a Brazilian Light Minie Rifle. The gun closest to the body appears to be a P53 Enfield.

I did a little more research on the gun closest to the body and found a site where that offered a better pic and some very good information. Instead of it being a P53 Enfield it is more likely an 1861 Special Model. The rear sight has a short base, the butt plate appears to be curved, and the ramrod is not Enfield. Looking more closely the middle band is flat like a '55 or '61, perhaps indicating a confederate repaired gun.
